Apple Music Student Discount: Personal or Family?

Apple Music Student costs $6.99 per month in the U.S., with one month free for eligible new subscribers and limited-time Apple TV access included. Qualifying college students must verify enrollment and reverify annually, for up to 48 months. For a family, compare the whole music bill: the student's included TV access cannot be shared through Family Sharing. U.S. prices, student eligibility and TV conditions. Verified October 14, 2026.

Apple's pricing page gives the student dollar rate rather than a single student-discount percentage: the official percentage is not published. An unpublished percentage does not mean there is no discount. At these inputs, the personal music price gap is $5 per month ($11.99 − $6.99). Our calculation is $5 ÷ $11.99 × 100 ≈ 41.7%, rather than exactly half price. The difference is a price gap, not a requirement to buy another subscription.

A household worksheet, not a price per imaginary listener

Compare the subscriptions your family would actually purchase. A Family plan can cover six members, but dividing its bill by six is misleading when only two people use music. Empty places do not pay part of the bill.

The following scenarios assume each named student independently qualifies, each other listener would buy Individual, and the group meets Apple's Family Sharing requirements. They compare ongoing music fees only. There are no trials, taxes, other bundles, partial-period adjustments or price changes. All price inputs were verified October 14, 2026.

Actual music listenersSeparate monthly subscriptionsOne Family music planLower music bill in this scenario
One student$6.99$19.99Student by $13
Two students$13.98$19.99Separate Student plans by $6.01
Three students$20.97$19.99Family by $0.98
One student and one nonstudent$18.98$19.99Separate plans by $1.01
One student and two nonstudents$30.97$19.99Family by $10.98

Separate cost = ($6.99 × S) + ($11.99 × I), where S is the number of qualified students and I is the number buying Individual. Compare that sum with $19.99 only if the intended members can actually join the family subscription. This is not an invitation to sell spare places or treat unrelated strangers as an eligible family.

The all-student crossover happens at the third listener. Two student payments are $6.01 below Family; adding a third student's $6.99 changes the comparison to $0.98 above Family. That is why “Student is the cheapest plan” and “Family costs less for us” can both be sensible conclusions. They have different units: one verified account versus the household bill.

With a student and a nonstudent, the combined $18.98 still undercuts Family by $1.01. Adding another nonstudent changes the gap sharply, because the added personal bill is $11.99, not $6.99. Do not use the student rate for every listener merely because one household member attends college.

For three independently qualified students, twelve unchanged paid monthly cycles cost $251.64 separately ($20.97 × 12) or $239.88 on Family ($19.99 × 12). The $11.76 annualized gap is arithmetic, not a published annual package. It is small enough that a change in who listens can reverse the decision. If one of those three stops using music, two Student plans total $13.98 again; unused Family capacity cannot preserve the old comparison.

Equal splitting describes reimbursement, not Apple's charge. Three listeners dividing Family equally would allocate $19.99 ÷ 3 ≈ $6.6633 each, while Apple still bills the organizer $19.99. Rounding that allocation to $6.66 gives $19.98 altogether. The remaining cent must be assigned rather than silently disappearing. Agree on the real total and who pays it before presenting a per-person price as settled.

Keep introductory offers out of that ongoing comparison. If each of three students receives a full first month free, twelve cycles from signup would cost 3 × 11 × $6.99 = $230.67 on separate Student plans. If an eligible Family trial also gives its full first month free, Family would cost 11 × $19.99 = $219.89 over the same twelve cycles. The $10.78 difference uses those specific trial assumptions. An existing subscriber cannot simply be assigned a new-subscriber trial to make the worksheet look cheaper.

The TV benefit changes the decision, not the music arithmetic

Apple describes the included Apple TV access as a limited-time benefit attached to Student. It does not appear as a separate subscription and cannot be shared with Family Sharing. The offer may end at any time and ends when you no longer qualify or do not renew Student. Verified October 14, 2026. Student TV access, pricing-page footnote for Student.

The household table therefore does not price three Student accounts as three family-wide TV subscriptions. It also does not claim the Music Family plan includes that Student TV benefit. Those would be different coverage assumptions from the documented offer.

For the three-student example, Family saves just $0.98 a month on music. If keeping a wanted TV benefit would require additional spending after a switch, the music saving alone cannot settle the choice. Let T be the additional monthly TV charge your account would actually incur. The combined Family route is $19.99 + T, compared with $20.97 for the three Student accounts while their included benefit remains available. The simplified cash crossover is T = $0.98.

That threshold is a calculation, not a quoted TV subscription price. Leave T unknown until you know what extra purchase, if any, you need. If your household already pays for TV independently and would keep it either way, that existing charge cancels out of the comparison. Do not add the full advertised value of an included service as “savings” when nobody would otherwise buy it.

There is also an account transition to inspect. Apple says an existing Individual or Student subscription's renewal is automatically cancelled when its family organizer subscribes to Family. Verified October 14, 2026. Existing subscriptions and Family. Check what happens to the attached Student TV access before relying on it after the switch. The documentation does not establish a permanent TV entitlement merely because it worked before joining Family.

Enrollment verification and the selected plan are separate checks

Apple requires enrollment in an associate, bachelor's, postgraduate or equivalent higher-education course at a college or university. Its instructions ask you to have your Apple Account credentials, a valid payment method, student ID and access to student email ready. Verification providers can include SheerID or UNiDAYS; follow the provider shown in your own flow. Verified October 14, 2026. Qualification and setup.

Creating an Apple Account is not the same as qualifying for Student. Select Student, complete enrollment verification, then finish the subscription flow. If a document request appears, submit the proof requested by that verifier; a personal email signup or a school search result does not by itself establish enrollment approval.

Existing subscribers should use Apple's change-plan route linked from its student instructions. Before confirming, inspect which Apple Account holds the purchase, which plan is selected and the next charge. A successful verification message does not answer whether the account is still renewing Individual or is already included in Family.

Renewal can change the household's inputs

Apple asks for student reverification once a year. Missing it, losing student eligibility or completing 48 months moves the subscription to Individual renewal. The introductory trial is for new subscribers, once per person; music and TV availability vary by country or region. Verified October 14, 2026. Student renewal conditions.

Recalculate the household worksheet when a member's status changes. A student and a nonstudent at today's ongoing inputs total $18.98. If the student also moves to Individual, two Individual plans total $23.98, which is $3.99 above Family. This is a conditional price comparison, not a prediction that graduation will happen on a particular date or that these rates will remain unchanged.

The useful household record names the people who need music, each person's actual plan, and the organizer's total bill. Student eligibility belongs to the qualifying account; an unused family place cannot restore it. Revisit the grouping when one listener leaves or a discounted subscription changes.

Choose Student for the eligible listener. Choose Family only after counting the people it will cover and checking which TV access the change would affect. A lower allocated share is useful when it describes a real household bill, not a group of empty places.
